Christmas has passed, the New Year celebration has ended, the football bowl season is over, and soon the cold of winter will begin to subside. The sap in the trees will start to rise as the weather warms, and most outdoors lovers will turn their thoughts to something extremely important…fishing!
Before that season really gets underway, however, it would behoove most serious anglers to spend a little time being reeducated into what is new in their beloved world. Here in the Atlanta area, a tremendous opportunity is on the horizon for those who are willing to spend the time and a small amount of cash. Everything you ever wanted to know or see about fly fishing or shallow water fishing is under the same roof for a couple of days.
On Saturday and Sunday, January 20 and 21 in the Gwinnett Center at 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth, fishermen can learn everything they ever wanted to know about shallow water and light tackle fishing from celebrity experts and guides from all over the country. They can sit in on informational seminars conducted by some of these world-renowned anglers, or simply browse through the latest name brand fishing products from hundreds of manufacturers in the many booths throughout the hall.
The star of this show each year is the legendary fly fisherman, outdoor journalist, and fly fishing instructor, Lefty Kreh. As an active outdoor writer for more than 45 years, Lefty has written for almost every major outdoor magazine in the country and many abroad. He is the retired outdoor editor of the The Baltimore Sun, and holds a staff position on several outdoor magazines. He has been given the prestigious “Lifetime Achievement Award” by the American Sportfishing Association, was honored with the “Lifetime Contribution Award” by the North American Fly Tackle Trade Association, and was inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame. In 1997, Lefty was also named “Angler of the Year” by Fly Rod and Reel Magazine. Additionally, Lefty has served a number of years as Senior Advisor to Trout Unlimited and the Federation of Fly Fishers. The versatile Mr. Kreh has fished in all 50 of the United States, in every province of Canada, over much of South America, the South Pacific, Europe, Iceland, and many other countries.
The following is a list of a few of the better-known speakers at the Atlanta Shallow Water Fishing Expo: Lefty Kreh (Fly Casting Instruction), Bill Vanderford (Fishing Lake Lanier and the Chattahoochee River), Henry Cowen (Fly Fishing for Stripers and False Albacore), Chris Scalley (Trout Fishing below Dams), and Ken Sturdivant (Simple Fish Talk).
